TEN TIPS FOR SUPPORT GROUP LEADERS

Mary Schofield, author of The High School Handbook and Homeschooling Through High School, was the speaker at the Arizona Families for Home Education Leadership Conference January 26, 2008 in Chandler.  One of her talks was on Ten Tips for Support Group Leaders, and she presented key ideas from a number of  homeschool leaders around the country. Then, Mary took ideas from the audience for a total of over 35 great suggestions.  This month, we will look at Mary’s top ten, and the others will be covered in future months.

  1. Have your priorities in order.  Focus first on your relationship with God, then your family, and then homeschool ministry.
    1. Other people’s emergencies are not necessarily your emergencies.  Don’t allow other people to cause you to live on alert mode.
  2. Godly character is a crucial foundation.  Be dependable, follow through on commitments.
    1. Integrity is key.  Stand clearly for what you believe in.
  3. Know your organization’s purpose, mission and vision.  Write these down and review on a regular basis.  Make sure that all on your team know these.  Keep your activities in line with your purpose so you don’t get side-tracked or too scattered.
  4. Good relationships are essential.   Work on building relationships with family, team, membership.
    1. Develop confidence and trust in your members through your openness and character.  If your group doesn’t have confidence and trust in the leadership, they won’t follow.  The older generation of leaders may not have the same trust factor from the younger moms at first as the peer group does, but this can be developed over time.
  5. Exhibit mercy and grace.  Grace is needed in the beginning, middle and end of relationships.  Don’t judge others on their choices.  There are different people with different needs and a variety of creative ways to meet the needs.
    1. Submit to each other and learn from each other.  Respect the choices of other moms for their own children, even if the path is not “right “ according to our standard.
    2. Be willing to overlook “cultural differences” of members.   It is impossible to minister to others if we are critical of them.
  6. Do the tough jobs.   Don’t delay hard conversations—it only makes things worse.
    1. Better to hurt one’s feelings by talking about an issue  than to harm the person by not talking or by talking to everyone else.
    2. Be sure to explain requirements (i.e. dress code) up front, before it becomes an issue in the middle of an event.
    3. Make the job of future leaders easier by keeping up-to-date with issues before they get out of hand.  It is easier to deal with something that only touches a few, than to do damage control with many.
    4. If leadership allows problems to go unresolved, then problem is resident in the leadership.  The whole group can be lost at this point, especially if the members get to vote in new leadership.
  7. Listen to your people.  Love them by listening to their views and ideas.  Even problem people have good ideas.  All complaints have a grain of truth that could be resolved early on by listening.
  8. Be flexible and willing to change.   Good leaders are agile.  Be willing to give up a project or method for a better one.  We are not married to a plan or a curriculum.
  9. Be filled with joy and enthusiasm.  Have a joyful spirit as a servant leader.  If there is no joy, it may be a red flag that you may not be the person for the job anymore.  Question what is going on and pray about why.  However, ministry does involve sacrifice, and there may be times of weariness that need to be pushed through to get the blessing on the other side.
    1. One remedy:  Make a commitment for a set period of time so there is room to evaluate the course and a gracious way out if need be.
    2. Have a “100-watt bulb” attitude.  A positive approach and energetic vision, from the passion of the heart, does much to inspire followers.
  10. Delegate.   Don’t get caught up in minutiae and micro-management.  If you can’t see what needs to be delegated, you are too close to the situation.  Ask for feedback and listen to what is said.
    1. Once delegated, let the other person run with the task.  Giving a framework for the task provides direction, but then allow the person and the Holy Spirit to be creative
