Let’s Read Math! …
Reading + Math = FUN!
Let’s Read
Math
is about reading children’s books and doing related math activities. Math
teachers like LRM as a way to introduce or reinforce math concepts in
an inviting way. Reading teachers like LRM because it involves reading
in the content area of math. Homeschoolers like LRM because they can
get the books in the library, then do the math activities at home.
Let’s Read
Math
began as an outreach program of the American Association of University Women.
Under the direction of Claire Passantino, volunteers ran parent-child
workshops in the local library. People started asking “Dr. Claire” to write
down her math lessons. There are now four available “Funbooks” for children
to use, with punchout math manipulatives on the cover. Each Funbook features
math activities for 16 children’s books. The math topics are drawn from state
and national standards for mathematics instruction. Funbooks are $7-$15 each.
LRM
is now being used in schools, after
school centers, and day camps. We are aware of programs in at least ten
different states, reaching over 3000 adults and 12,000 children. On May 6,
2008 “Dr. Claire” will run workshops in Phoenix and Sun City West:
Tuesday May 6
9:00-10:30 AM
Covenant Home School Resource Center

Phoenix, AZ 85014

The
featured book is “Amelia Bedelia.” Come dress chickens and pigs as a way to
learn about combinatorics. This particular lesson works for children in
grades K-4. There is a materials fee of $7 per child, which includes your
own take-home copy of Funbook 1. ($3 without the Funbook)
