OUR PHILOSOPHY

Covenant Home School Resource Center seeks to encourage, empower and equip parents to take on more responsibility in the home schooling process. However, we recognize that many parents lack confidence, expertise, or resources to competently teach all areas without any outside assistance, and a beautiful picture of the body of Christ comes into play when we can be interdependent and draw upon each others' strengths. Within our churches and families, we expect to have others come alongside whose gifts and talents exceed ours in certain areas, to most effectively accomplish our goals. The same is true for educating our children.  This is not to encourage parents to opt out of their responsibility for instructing their children. Rather, our philosophy is to come along side as mentors and advocates who will help fill immediate educational gaps while training parents in the skills, which they lack.

It is quite a scary endeavor for families to jump into home education in the upper grades and know how to handle all of the aspects of teaching their children all of the subjects. Most are very grateful for guidance, mentoring, and assistance from others, especially in the areas of math, science, foreign language and group-centered programs such as fine arts. These parents want the best for their children, and may believe they have little option except to return to the public school if they are unable to have the academic needs met within the home schooling community.  We propose to fill some of those gaps WHILE training the parents in teaching those subjects, and encouraging them to persevere in home education. In a sense, we will provide a home school co-op environment which will use qualified teachers in Parent/Student classes housed in one location, only our focus will be specifically those classes which many parents find challenging beyond their capabilities.

Our resource center program will NOT EVER include full enrollment options. We do not take government funding of any sort, and we also will not provide programs, which could justify "absentee" parents.  We believe that the parents are still the ones to direct and manage the education of their children, and our classes can be "stress-relievers".  Parents can delegate the most stressful classes, thereby freeing up that much more time and energy for doing the rest and doing it well.

We believe that the services we are offering are fundamental and essential parts of the home educating journey. Instruction in the harder core classes is a great concern to a significant majority of parents, as they realize that college entrance is becoming increasingly difficult without strong foundations in math, sciences, and foreign language. Certainly, many families would fall by the wayside without access to information, support and resources. Rarely do parents inquire about PE classes, which could be accommodated in a number ways, and lack of which will not hinder college admission.

We desire to be a "third hand" to the local and statewide support groups and organizations to provide ongoing access to answers of commonly asked questions through our weekly Q and A information meetings, workshops, Resource Directory, and ongoing parent training. Although we are not a support group in the traditional sense (we don’t have regular park days, field trips and events with the same core group), we will explore ways to provide ongoing support and information. We wish to complement the support groups, and perhaps add a different dimension to what they provide, and be a place for the new families or those not connected with another group to find what they need. We regularly direct families to groups in their local areas.

We recognize each family as autonomous in making choices to best meet their needs, and we acknowledge that there is a wide variety of workable avenues for accomplishing the education of children.  While we desire to promote home education apart from the public school system, we realize that not all families embrace the same philosophy.  We are glad to answer questions on this matter, and to provide appropriate information.

We love home education and are so glad to see wonderful people from all walks of live participating in it.  Let us walk with you on this adventure, as we continue Equipping Families for a Successful Homeschool Journey.
